While we can

Cruise Day Seven – Athens

I write this post hoping that no Athenians are looking over my shoulder as I sit in this street side cafe. Athens the city is dirty and absolutely covered in graffiti. I can sort of sympathise I guess because there is no money available for maintenance and graffiti cleaning. The people seem to take this all in their stride, no one batted an eyelid as Di and I walked home from dinner last night and there was a small group of young men busily defacing buildings with their spray cans, the thing was they weren’t hiding it at all, there were people everywhere.

That’s it, I have had my rant lets move on. Yesterday we visited the Acropolis worth the visit I guess but I suggest going very early to avoid “a” the crowds and “b” the heat. It dates back to well over 2,000 years of history and site of the Apostle Pauls famous speech. Unfortunately the front of the Parthenon was enshrouded in scaffolding which sort of restricted the good photo you could take.

The saving grace for Athens for me was where we stayed, “Live In Athens” appartments. Very friendly staff, very nice apartment in an excellent location

And so ends the Cruise leg of our holiday, we bid farewell to Gavin, Beck, Maureen & Jen and head of to the next chapter, Orvieto here we come…

Huh, yeah, you wouldn’t want anyone to see you type ‘dirty’ and ‘grafitti’!
Thanks for sharing your (more than a glimpse) of Europe and the entertaining dialogue 🙂
Loved the venicular railway – you should see the one in Penang, Malaysia, you have to crane your head right back to see the top of it, I paid for a taxi to drive me there, and there was no way in the world you’d get me to go up it!
What would you give you give the cruise out of 10 and how does it compare with others you went on?
Orvieto was a good read, sounds amazing x Ilsa

The cruise I would rate an 8.5 out of 10. Very luxurious. Food was great. We had perfect sailing weather, no wind so the seas were flat. Would have liked to see more of the shows but they were just too late at night for us mere mortals. We could have gone to the early dinner sitting and caught the earlier shows but would rather spend time with our travelling companions who preferred the later sitting. The one show we did see though was fantastic. In comparison with the only other recent cruise we have done which was the Pacific Dawn, it was a little more luxuriously appointed but not much. I would rate the food as about the same. The clientele were a lot more reserved than the Pacific Dawn, less party types which also suited us oldies. The other thing was that the destination are not comparable, a cruise in the Mediterranean goes to far better destinations than any Pacific cruise (in my opinion).
