Travel Day – Varenna to Interlaken

It was time to say goodbye to Varenna and head off to Interlaken Switzerland. The train station was only about 700m from our accomodation so it was a relatively easy walk. Or as easy as could be dragging such large luggage around, note to self, think of what you want to take to Europe and then half it, you don’t need it.

Varenna, Lake Como

Well today we were really excited to get out there and take a look at beautiful Verenna and Lake Como. What a disappointment to wake to thunderstorms and rain. Oh well you can’t control the weather. We will just have to make the most of it. It worked OK for me as I propped myself up at a Cafe and watched the Geelong, Adelaide (sorry Dion) game live on my iPad. Di went to our Accomodation and read her book.

San Gimignano & Siena

Today we are heading out to San Gimignano & Siena. Driving takes full concentration there are so many things that are different when you are driving on the other side of the road. I don’t know how many times I reached for the door handle rather than the gear stick. You have to remember which way to look for traffic when you come to intersections. Anyway we headed off to San Gimignano first, it took about 30 minutes or so.

Florence

Florence, capital of Italy’s Tuscany region and birthplace of the Renaissance, is home to masterpieces of art and architecture. One of its most iconic sites is the Florence Cathedral, with its terra-cotta-tiled dome, when you get up close it is absolutely huge.

Orvieto

I write this as we travel by train from Orvieto to Florence passing through some of the most beautiful countryside you could hope to see. We have just passed the hilltop town of Cortona where the movie “Under the Tuscan Sun” was filmed. It’s a journey of some 2 hours 20 minutes so I have time to reflect on our visit to Orvieto.

Arreviderci Venezia

Last day in Venice today before we board the Queen Victoria for a weeks cruise. After what the others have told us we are in for a real treat. Time will tell.

Did a bit of shopping this morning, you would think Di would be sick of that by now, but she is insatiable. Then had lunch at a beautiful little restaurant which had a nice outdoor garden area right beside the canal. Di had her favourite caprese salad and I had ravioli. When in Rome hey?

Venice by foot

Well today we met up with our other fellow travellers. We were to meet next to the statue of the Lion in San Marco’s square at 10am. It was good to see everyone. Spent most of the day wondering the maze of streets shopping. Not much of a fun day for me, (or Gav) but the girls loved it. Fortunately this was interspaced with a number of watering hole stops. Naturally we got lost on numerous occasions but it doesn’t really matter when you are in Venice because all roads lead to a Piazza or San Marcos Square eventually.

We are in Venice Yay!

The flight from Frankfurt to Venice was only an hour, everything went like clockwork. We were a bit concerned initially because our luggage was transferred automatically from flight to flight as we made our way to Venice. We have heard of some horror stories with lost luggage and even fellow travellers had experienced this themselves (haven’t they John). We didn’t need to be concerned because our luggage was the first off the carousel. Drama Avoided!
