Dijon

Had a lovely breakfast sent to our rooms this morning all be it a European breakfast, no bacon and eggs here. Still very enjoyable. Another great thing about this accomodation is the internet, it’s lightening fast. I have been running a speed test at each of the accomodations we have been staying at (hey, I’m a nerd, leave me alone) , 48mb/sec download and 5mb/sec upload, NBN speeds.

Interlaken, Jungfrau & Lauterbrunnen

Switzerland is a beautiful country but the price of food is over the top. Yesterday we went to a local pub for a late lunch when we got here. Di had a small bottle of sparkling water and a bowl of soup I had a beer and a Potato Rosti with bacon and a fried egg on top the total came to $60 AUD. Needless to say we have re thought our eating habits while here. Had Subway for dinner tonight and finished off with a Sundae from McDonalds.

Travel Day – Varenna to Interlaken

It was time to say goodbye to Varenna and head off to Interlaken Switzerland. The train station was only about 700m from our accomodation so it was a relatively easy walk. Or as easy as could be dragging such large luggage around, note to self, think of what you want to take to Europe and then half it, you don’t need it.

Varenna, Lake Como

Well today we were really excited to get out there and take a look at beautiful Verenna and Lake Como. What a disappointment to wake to thunderstorms and rain. Oh well you can’t control the weather. We will just have to make the most of it. It worked OK for me as I propped myself up at a Cafe and watched the Geelong, Adelaide (sorry Dion) game live on my iPad. Di went to our Accomodation and read her book.

San Gimignano & Siena

Today we are heading out to San Gimignano & Siena. Driving takes full concentration there are so many things that are different when you are driving on the other side of the road. I don’t know how many times I reached for the door handle rather than the gear stick. You have to remember which way to look for traffic when you come to intersections. Anyway we headed off to San Gimignano first, it took about 30 minutes or so.

Florence

Florence, capital of Italy’s Tuscany region and birthplace of the Renaissance, is home to masterpieces of art and architecture. One of its most iconic sites is the Florence Cathedral, with its terra-cotta-tiled dome, when you get up close it is absolutely huge.

Orvieto

I write this as we travel by train from Orvieto to Florence passing through some of the most beautiful countryside you could hope to see. We have just passed the hilltop town of Cortona where the movie “Under the Tuscan Sun” was filmed. It’s a journey of some 2 hours 20 minutes so I have time to reflect on our visit to Orvieto.
